What benefits can a robotic maple seed bring to mankind, you ask?
Maple seeds, while they might look innocent as they spiral down in the wind, are actually quite efficient fliers. And so, to emulate this efficient flight, Lockheed Martin created the SAMARAI. Named after “samara” for maple seed, the SAMARAI has one wing and rotates like a helicopter blade to travel around efficiently.
The principle behind the flight of maple seeds is thus: when the maple seed falls, a miniature vortex of wind is created from the leading edge of the spinning seed on the leaf portion. This reduces the pressure above the leaf, pulling it upwards, thus resulting in almost double the lift the seed would otherwise have experienced. Then, when robotics are implemented, it only increases the power of this interesting property.
The SAMARAI has a lot of potential as a tool for the military and the police. The robot can be thrown like a boomerang and set to land at a certain spot, or hover in the air. With its on-board camera, police and military personnel can use SAMARAI to look around corners.
